Staying Motivated as an Author

Writer: Peter ServidioPeter Servidio

As an independent author, staying motivated can be one of the most challenging aspects of your work. After all, you’re going it alone, without the backing of a publishing house or a team of writers, editors, and marketers. The onus is on you to keep yourself motivated in order to get your book out in the world, so that you can reach readers and build a fan base.

But don't worry — that doesn't mean it's impossible to stay motivated as an independent author. In fact, with a little bit of effort and creativity, you can use a range of techniques to keep yourself inspired and productive. Here are some ways to stay motivated as an independent author.

Celebrate Your Accomplishments

When you’re an independent author, the journey to finishing a book can seem long and arduous. It can be easy to get bogged down in the details and the constant struggle to stay motivated. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and recognize the accomplishments that you’ve achieved so far. Each time you finish a chapter, finish a draft, or reach a milestone, celebrate your success. It can be as simple as taking the time to recognize how far you’ve come, or treating yourself to something special.

Set SMART Goals

Goal-setting is a great way to stay on track and ensure that you’re making progress. But when you’re setting goals for yourself, it’s important to make sure that they’re SMART — that is, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This way, you can break down big tasks into manageable chunks, set deadlines for yourself, and track your progress.

Surround Yourself with Positive People

It can be easy to get caught up in negative thoughts when you’re an independent author. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with positive people who can help to lift you up. This could be a writing group or a community of other independent authors who can provide encouragement and advice. It could also be a mentor or a close friend who can help to keep you focused and motivated.

Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome

When you’re working on a book, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the thought of the final product. After all, this is the end goal that you’re striving for. But instead of focusing on the end result, try to focus on the process of writing. Enjoy the act of writing and the creative process. This will help to keep you motivated and keep your focus on the task at hand.

Take Breaks

It’s easy to feel like you have to work non-stop in order to get your book finished. But this isn’t the case. It’s important to step away from your work and take breaks. This will help to keep you from burning out and will provide much-needed respite from the task at hand. Whether it’s taking a walk, reading a book, or simply taking some time away from your desk, taking breaks is a great way to stay motivated.

Find Your Inspiration

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to find the things that inspire you. Whether it’s a favorite author, a great movie, a painting, or something else entirely, having something to draw inspiration from will help to keep you going. It’s important to find what works for you and keep it close at hand.

Stay Focused and Keep Trying

Staying focused on your goals is one of the best ways to stay motivated. It can be easy to get distracted by other projects, but try to stay focused on your writing. And if you ever feel like you’re stuck, don’t give up. Keep trying and push through until you find your groove again.

As an independent author, staying motivated can be a difficult task. But with a bit of effort and creativity, you can use a range of techniques to keep yourself inspired and productive. Celebrate your accomplishments, set SMART goals, surround yourself with positive people, focus on the process, not the outcome, take breaks, find your inspiration, and stay focused and keep trying. By using these methods, you can stay motivated and make progress on your book.
